Visit to a Gem mine

The Rathnapura district is known as the gem capital of Sri Lanka. Rakwana, situated in Rathnapura district is also a area which has harvested many varieties of precious Sri Lankan gems from mining. Throughout history, Sri Lanka has been known as a land of gems. King Solomon was said to have procured a great ruby for the queen of Sheba from Serendip (Sri Lanka’s former name). Make a visit to an active gem mine in the area to experience the unique method of traditional mining of Sri Lankan gems.

You will be accompanied by your guide who will extensively explain the process of Gem trade in Sri Lanka and you get a glimpse of the mines and the hard labour that goes into the process. You could purchase any valuable gems as per your preference or simply enjoy one of the renown trades of the island. Bringing water and being in comfortable attire is encouraged and after a couple of hours, you will be heading back to the hotel to clean up.
