Trek to Heeloya Village – Knuckles range

A remote agricultural village Heeloya is located in the heart of the Knuckles mountain range. The main livelihood of the village community is paddy cultivation, home gardening, livestock and spices. Villagers engage in toddy tapping, handicrafts, bee-keeping, traditional dances etc., as supplementary income sources. As a traditional village, it still practices some of the unique local customs in daily life.
The trek commences early morning with a brief description of the route and the terrain. The trek is mostly downhill and approx 4 hours duration with plenty of time for photography. During the trek you will see a range of different types of vegetation, plenty of bird life and remote waterfalls.
At the village, travelers can participate in village life by engaging in plucking fruits and vegetables for a meal to be prepared according to the local taste. They would also get an opportunity to observe the Heeloya waterfall and taste local species and herbs. Visitors to Heeloya can get a feel of the life in a typical village in addition to trekking and sightseeing and a culinary experience in true Sri Lankan style!
