Kumana National Park Safari

A less visited national park located in the southeast corner of Sri Lanka, spanning over 18, 419 hectares, Kumana national park is a well-known eco-tourism attraction. The most significant feature is the ‘Kumana villu’ – a 200-hectare natural swamp lake, fed by the Kumbukkan Oya (river) through a half mile long narrow channel. It is in this mangrove that many water birds next during the months of May/June.  Therefore, regular sightings of pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis, herons, egrets would be possible during the season from April to July.

It is also home to some of the mammals found in the larger Yala national park, such as elephants and leopards and the vegetation of Kumana mainly consists of mangrove trees, kumbuk trees, and karan fern as well as open marsh areas. Preferable accommodation options to discover Kumana would be Arugambay, Panama and Kumana areas. It is recorded that over 255 species of birds are found in Kumana national park and it is a half of the total bird population found in Sri Lanka.
