The Pekoe Trail

The Pekoe Trail is a 300 km route that starts just outside Kandy and weaves its way through the central highlands up to Nuwara Eliya. These tracks have existed since the Colonial times and are now divided into walkable “stages”. These were the tracks on which freshly plucked leaves were transported by horse-drawn carts to factories for processing. The trail’s stages range from treks of 6 km to longer mountain hikes.

Experience a 10 km walk along the Pekoe Trail between Ragala and Kandapola. The uphill walk starts at Ragala town and winds its way up to the Kandapola hills passing vegetable cultivations,  tea fields, forests and remote hamlets where you can witness daily life. On a clear day, one can easily make out the contour of Haputale, Lipton Seat and Ella Rock, wrapping around the Uva bowl. This stage of the trail ends at Kandapola town. An easier version of the trail can be accomplished by starting at Kandapola town and walking down hill to end at Ragala.
