Bevis Bawa’s Brief Garden
4 October 2021
The house itself used to be the residence of Bevis Bawa, a sibling of the great architect Geoffrey Bawa. It portrays Sri Lankan life in the most vivid way possible. It is believed that it displays the more wild style of Bevis as opposed to that of his brother. It consists of winding pathways opening onto amazing vistas with sculptures dotted throughout the foliage. Bawa used his skill to transform the family rubber estate into an enchanting paradise.
He used a combination of art, architecture, and sculptures to make a modern work of art. You find doors that lead to different parts of the garden, stairways, Roman art structures and ponds. From monsters pouring water out of their mouths to beautiful angels holding up flowers, the designs cover many eras and range from Hinduism to Christianity and more. This 2hr tour is open to the public daily except on public holidays. Those with a keen eye for architecture will find this to be an outstanding architectural masterpiece to remember.
